Not drinking enough water could be ruining your career & your life …
Swish, Swish. Water is ‘the new black’. Jump on the water-trend band wagon. Why? Because studies report morale, demeanour, appearance, efficiency at work and even weight loss could be in jeopardy all because of our lack of the aqua.
WebMD inform us that water washes out toxins, can control calories, energizes our muscles, helps keep our skin looking good and assists internal organ function. All sounds great but how practical is it to drink the recommended two litres of water a day? Possibly not very if it’s all in one go. Spacing it out seems to be key. Still, 2 litres – that’s two large bottles of the stuff.
Brain Function
Water and brain function are inextricably linked. You can’t have one without the other. Loss of focus, fatigue, headaches, sleep issues, anger & depression are all linked to a lack of water. Water comprises around 70% of our body mass and without it we’re not functioning well at all. Studies have shown that if you’re only 1% dehydrated, you will likely have a 5% decrease in cognitive function.
Maintain Concentration
Many of us start to lose concentration after 30 minutes of focus. Water can be a good way to break up the day as well as staying hydrated. If you’re drinking two litres of water steadily, chances are hourly bathroom breaks will be on the agenda. Taking 2 minutes out from your desk will actually benefit your concentration once you’re back. If you’re working out on location it may not be as easy to nip off to the bathroom.
Celebrities Love It
Cameron Diaz is a 2L advocate. She downs the stuff when she wakes up. Scientists do say this helps refresh and awaken the organs at daybreak. If you think about it, our bodies have been asleep for what, 8 to 10 hours? Perhaps longer. In that time no intake of water has been achieved.
Khloe Kardashian recently voiced that she was advised by nutritionists to drink her body weight in ounces of water. For her, that’s 5-6 litres. She adds flavour to water with fruit to keep it interesting.
Flavoured Water
There are 8 – 10 standard glasses to 2L of water. So if you can’t drink too much while at work, a few glasses in the evening and a few sips throughout the day is better than none at all. Tea and coffee is said not to count. Tea and coffee are both a diuretic, meaning they take water away from the body.
Watery Foods
Fruits themselves, salads and soups all contain water and help re-hydrate us but shouldn’t be used as substitutes.
Emocto Love It
We’ve tried gulping down the recommended capacities in the office and while at first drinking two litres seems daunting, we must say we felt that we had 5-10 times more energy, felt less tired, more focussed and might have lost weight because we were nipping back and forth to the lavatory more frequently! We recorded a productivity increase in work and felt happier. Bonus.
Glowing Skin
Even super models attribute glowing skin to drinking as much water as possible. Good news for those reaching for the botox. Many cosmetic surgeons state that those with wrinkly foreheads are most likely dehydrated and not prematurely ageing at all.
If you’ve got a long journey to work, it may be a good idea to start on the water marathon once you arrive -whatever works for you, if you get those sips in – do it, you’ll definitely notice the difference!
