The 7 Different Learning Styles

By emocto @emoctoofficial · On 13th August 2018

Learning is institutionalised when we’re young. We are introduced to the notion of learning as something that happens within the confines of a classroom and so our understanding of the word is limited and associative.

The truth is that we all learn differently using our own unique combination of the seven main learning styles. Not everyone has one style they use exclusively but a number and in a range of circumstances. To decide which style is your dominant, here are some summaries.

Visual

Also known as spatial, this style is governed by the eyes. Dominant users often visualise concepts to understand them; think spider diagrams on walls, graphs etc. They are usually spatially aware which makes them more balanced and physically coordinated than the average person.

The 7 Different Learning Styles

Aural

Usually learns through listening and as such is often talented musically. These people can decipher sonic problems such as a car engine that doesn’t sound like its working properly.

The 7 Different Learning Styles

Verbal

Those imbued with a talent for words often naturally use this method. It can be either written or spoken but writing ones thoughts down can be a very good technique to encourage memory. Some prefer to tape themselves or others and listen to it back.

The 7 Different Learning Styles

Physical

Similarly spatially aware to visual users except these people are more hands-on. Muscle memory ordinarily builds at a rapid rate and the sense of touch is the go-to sense. If you are physical-dominant you’re likely a good driver or athlete.

The 7 Different Learning Styles

Logical

Lists are your friend. Perhaps users who prefer this style can be considered the most scientific learners and prefer definite. They learn through organisation and grasp as well as utilise mathematical theory in their reasoning i.e. algebra/trigonometry/ Make excellent engineers.

The 7 Different Learning Styles

Social

A propensity for group work dominates this learning technique. Users study behavioural patterns and mimic what they see others do. Often skilled and energised by role-playing scenarios

The 7 Different Learning Styles

Solitary

You may be this type if you learn well from self-reflection. You might keep a diary or journal. Working in groups does not benefit this type-dominant and they spend a lot of time refining systems on their own and justifying their own actions. There is a tendency amongst those who primarily use this style to align goals with personal values more so than others.
